ERS Gold Medal in ARDS

The ERS Gold Medal in ARDS offers a €50,000 research grant to the recipient and recognises a researcher who has made an outstanding contribution in the field of ARDS and who is currently pursuing an active research project in ARDS.

Greet Van den Berghe

Professor Van den Berghe studied medicine at KU Leuven University, Belgium and Bristol University, UK. She specialised in anaesthesiology and intensive care medicine, studied biostatistics and obtained a PhD in endocrinology. She is currently Head of the Department and Laboratory of Intensive Care Medicine at KU Leuven; a large, 67-bed tertiary centre treating over 3,200 patients annually. She is a full Professor of Medicine and runs a research programme on the endocrinology of critical illness.

With over 41,200 citations and an h-index of 81, she has authored more than 475 peer-reviewed papers and chapters in international textbooks on intensive care and endocrinology and has been an invited speaker at numerous congresses worldwide. She is co-supervisor of 41 PhDs. She was Clinical Research Investigator for the Fund for Scientific Research, Belgium, member of the Belgian Royal Academy of Medicine, achieved an advanced grant from the Ideas Program in 2017 followed by another advanced grant from Horizon 2020 of the EU, is member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, and Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. She has received more than 60 scientific awards, among which the prestigious FWO Excellence Prize, and this year, the Outstanding Clinical Investigator Award from the American Endocrine Society.
