ERS Sadoul Lecture Award

The Sadoul Lecture Award recognises a senior scientist with a worldwide reputation. It commemorates the French scientist Paul Sadoul, who was a founding member of the SEPCR and a long-time editor of the Bulletin Européen de Physiopathologie Respiratoire; predecessors of the present-day European Respiratory Society and European Respiratory Journal.

Marisa Bonsignore

Professor Bonsignore graduated in Medicine in 1979, going on to specialise in Cardiology and Respiratory Medicine. She was a researcher at the National Council of Research (CNR), Italy, from 1990 until 2002, before becoming Associate Professor of Respiratory Medicine at the University of Palermo. From 2005 until 2009, Professor Bonsignore was Director of the Residency Program in Respiratory Medicine at the University of Palermo. In 2017 she gained a National Certification for Full Professorship in Respiratory Medicine and in 2018 she became a Fellow of ERS.

Professor Bonsignore has spent many years abroad, with periods at the University of California,
University of Toronto, University of Madison, and University of Barcelona. With research interests in sleep apnoea and biology of exercise, her ERS activities include serving as secretary for the working group ‘Gas Exchange and Exercise’ as well for ERS Assembly 4 between 2011–2014, before becoming Assembly Head in 2014 until 2017. She has also been Chair of the Task Force on Sleepiness and Fitness to Drive in Patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnoea, a member of the HERMES project, and a member of the working group ERS-ESRS for the educational program in sleep medicine.

Outside of ERS, Professor Bonsignore has been Chair of the ESADA Clinical Research Collaboration, as well as Chair of the Sleep and Breathing Conference; a role she will take on again in 2021. She has authored 147 papers and has an H-Index of 38. She has been a member of the editorial board of Chest (2005–2014), and currently serves on the board of COPD and the European Respiratory Journal, as well as a reviewer for the Respiratory and Physiology journals.
